Description

The East Main Street Bridge in Welland, Ontario, is also known as Bridge 13. It was built between 1927 and 1930 during the construction of the fourth Welland Canal. This bridge is one of the three largest vertical-lift bridges on the canal and was the most expensive, costing $986,363. The bridge is a recognizable landmark in the downtown core of Welland. Bridge 13 ceased operation in 1972 when the Welland Canal at that section was closed. After its closure, the bridge was permanently locked in the lowered position.
