Description

The Mohawk Island Lighthouse, commonly referred to as the Gull Island Lighthouse, was built between 1846 and 1848 to serve as a navigational aid for ships, alerting them to the dangerous offshore shoals close to the Welland Canal. Standing 18 meters tall, it was built using limestone and equipped with ten lamps in parabolic reflectors. The lighthouse was automated in 1933 and decommissioned in 1969 after a fire destroyed its mechanism. Though in ruins, it is still an important historical landmark and heritage lighthouse for the local community, boaters, and park visitors…and the thousands of seabirds that populate its shore!
