Description
Samuel Hopkins was a prominent businessman in early Port Colborne, but his remarkable life has been overshadowed by unusual tales that emerged after his death!
Born in Cork, Ireland, in 1822, Hopkins made his way to Canada in 1831. Following a career in the navy and an unsuccessful venture in California’s gold rush, he settled in Port Colborne. There, he established himself as a prosperous businessman, ultimately achieving the fortune he had long sought. However, his health began to decline in 1899, prompting him to construct a mausoleum before his passing. This grand structure, encircled by a stone wall, holds its own enigmatic narrative and is rumored to be cursed. Legend has it that three men once broke into Hopkins’ Tomb, only to face a string of disturbing accidents months later, resulting in one man’s death and the others losing their limbs. Numerous accounts of ghostly apparitions and eerie voices have also emerged from the site. To lift the curse, it is said one must walk around the tomb either seven times or, according to some tales, three times, each time knocking as they go.
