La Grande Hermine
$250.00 – $750.00 +HST
Description
Originally built in 1914 in Québec, this vessel began its journey as an incongruous ferry on the St. Lawrence River. It later became a cargo ship before being converted into a floating restaurant. In 1991, it was transformed into a replica of “La Grande Hermine” (French for “The Big Ermine”, a once valuable commodity in early New France), a ship sailed by Jacques Cartier during his 1535 exploration of the St. Lawrence River!
In 1997, “La Grande Hermine” arrived at Jordan Harbour with ambitious plans to turn it into a restaurant or casino; however, the businessman behind the project passed away before these plans could come to life, and the ship was abandoned, becoming an odd tourist attraction along the highway. An unsolved arson in 2003 destroyed the remaining flammable materials, and in late 2024, the charred and rusted remains were completely removed.
