Mohawk Island Sunset

Description
The Mohawk Island Lighthouse, or Gull Island Lighthouse, was built between 1846 and 1848 to guide ships and warn them of nearby shoals close to the Welland Canal. Standing 18 meters tall, it was built using limestone and equipped with ten lamps in parabolic reflectors. The lighthouse was automated in 1933 and decommissioned in 1969 after a fire destroyed its mechanism. Although in ruins, it remains an important historical landmark and a cherished lighthouse for the local community, boaters, park visitors, and seabirds! In 2015, it was designated a heritage lighthouse by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
