During the fall of 2024, while hiking through Algonquin Park, I encountered a scene that I had envisioned capturing for years. Nestled off a quiet dirt road and at the base of a hill, a weathered tree stump sat in the stillness of a calm bay. Its gnarled form was beautifully contrasted by a young sapling sprouting resiliently from its center.

In that moment, I knew this was the image I had been waiting for. However, fading light and other commitments that day meant I couldn’t take the shot. Determined, I resolved to return the following day to do justice to the scene.

For me, this image embodies renewal, fresh beginnings, and the enduring promise that life persists. The age of the stump is a mystery, but the sapling marks the start of its own journey—a poignant reminder of nature’s cycle of decay and rebirth.
