Twin Flight Locks
$250.00 – $750.00 +HST
Description
The Twin Flight Locks are a remarkable engineering achievement of the 43 km (26 mi) Welland Canal, enabling two ships to pass simultaneously in either direction. The twin-flight locks raise or lower large ships by nearly 43 metres over a distance of 1,250 metres, using over 91 million litres of water for each operation – at only 10 minutes per lock!
The locks allow ships to climb 99.5 metres (326 feet) up the Niagara Escarpment, earning it the nickname, “Neptune’s Staircase”! The Welland Canal facilitates the passage of approximately 3,000 vessels annually, transporting an impressive 40 million tonnes (88 billion pounds) of cargo between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean.
Seen in this image is the CSL Baie Comeu (upbound) and an unnamed Algoma Ship.
